Why Berkeley is Wrong on BRT

Two Thursdays ago, the Berkeley City Council voted on the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) plan for AC Transit’s East Bay Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.  The Council essentially had three options: 1) “Full Build”, as recommended by the city staff, which would mean dedicated lanes running up Telegraph Avenue and “island” bus stops, where passengers could board the bus in the middle of the road, much like you see in San Francisco on Market Street. 2) A “Reduced Impact Alternative” as prepared by Mayor Bates and other councilmembers, which was a watered down version of the Full Build option, but still included dedicated lanes and islands.  3) A so-called “Rapid Bus Plus” (RBP) option which, in essence, is a no-build option because it removed all dedicated lanes and made no lane reconfigurations on roads.

After impassioned, and sometimes theatrical testimony by the public, the Berkeley City Council succumbed to NIMBY pressure and rejected any elements of full-build and endorsed only option three, the so-called, “Rapid Bus Plus” plan.

Before I go into the issues of BRT, let me quickly address the importance of the LPA and why you should be upset that Berkeley has practically killed the BRT project for everyone else.  In very simplified terms, the way a project like this goes is that AC Transit puts together an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on how they want the project to run.  In this case, they give their preferred route for a BRT system from San Leandro to Oakland to Berkeley.  This is then sent to each city for review.  Each city then decides what they believe is the best alternative for their city, the LPA.

EBYD Urges Berkeley to Support BRT!

Today, East Bay Young Dems sent a letter to the Berkeley City Council urging them to support AC Transit’s East Bay Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project by approving the city’s Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) plan.  Approval of the LPA is the final step in the BRT study phase.  AC Transit will take the LPA’s from Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro and develop a final proposal to be voted on by each city that will allow them to begin construction of the proposed BRT system connecting downtown’s San Leandro, Oakland and Berkeley.

The Berkeley City Council will hold a special council meeting this Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 7:00 pm to discuss the LPA.  Residents of Berkeley are encouraged to attend.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous!

There’s a lot of money being thrown around this election season. Not just by Mega-Bucks Whitman who has already thrown $59 million of her own money into her campaign for governor of our fair state, but by others across the country. In this little excerpt from MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown”, we get a brief look at both Connecticut (where they rank candidates by the size of their yachts) and California, where Meg Whitman is reported to spend $150 million of her own money by campaigns end!

Here in California, we can’t let someone like Meg Whitman try to buy us off. And thankfully, as mentioned in the clip below, we have a tradition of not being fooled by all that money. If Meg Whitman really cared, she could have run her campaign on donations and wrote a $59 million check to CalTrain, who is facing real problems and risking to close service entirely.  I’m just saying…

Fresno County Turns Blue!

Last night, i got word that Fresno County, long a bastion of conservative Republicans, had officially turned blue for the first time in a quarter century.  Fresno County now officially has more registered Democrats than Republicans!

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=103875809859

I grew up in the city of Visalia in neighboring Tulare County and am very happy and excited that our northern neighbor is a nice light blue.  Having grown up as a Latino and openly gay, it wasn’t easy.  At the time when i was going to school there, there was still evidence of lingering racism and much more animosity towards the LGBT community.  But the fact that Fresno County is now more Democrat gives me hope that future young people in similar situations as i was will not feel as constrained by the views of their community.

Democrats have long been allies of the Latino and LGBT community and will continue to be so for a long time.  With an increasing number of Democrats registering in these conservative areas, we can hope to elect more moderate and liberal Democrats who will work to protect these communities and make it easier and more comfortable for them to be proud of who they are and what they want to accomplish.

Of course, while Fresno County now has around 200+ advantage in Democrat voter registration, Tulare County is still solidly Republican both in registration and voting record.  Similarly, Fresno County has still voted Republican in the last election and many before.  But what this means is that the trend is upward towards a blue region.  Enthusiasm and hope are never forsaken commodities.

“I Have a Pocket Constitution!”

This video was just too entertaining to not post. It shows a young journalism student interviewing Tea Party protesters outside the Capitol in DC this past Sunday before the final vote to improve health care.

Remember, you don’t need to be a constitutional scholar to know when something is unconstitutional… you just need a pocket Constitution!
