Our club’s mission is to ensure that young people have a strong voice in the Democratic Party. We believe that the best way to accomplish this goal is help young people connect with and create opportunities for meaningful service. Along the way, we believe it’s important to approach our work with a sense of humor and to have a good time while we take control of our futures.

2010 Census – undercounts mean under representation

2010 Census is almost upon us. It gets underway in earnest in the Spring. We’ll live with the results of this count for the next 10 years.
What does it means to us in practical terms. For every person who’s not counted, California loses about $1,000 per year in Federal funding. A 0.1% undercount translates into roughly $30 million dollars a year that will be going somewhere else.
The chances of a significant undercount have been made much more likely because of decisions made in the Bush administration to reduce funding for the 2010 census and the intransigence of the Republican Senators who refused to ratify Obama’s choice to head the Census Bureau until recently.
The Meetup’s focus is on how to make sure everyone is counted and offer an action item on how to help make sure that happens. We’ll have Ted Wang presenting ideas on how his organization has been able to leverage foundation resources for census outreach in historically undercounted communities. This is just the sort of discussion that we need to be having before an undercount has happened.
In addition to the dollars that will not be coming to California, a significant undercount will greatly affect the way new Congressional district lines are drawn. Its already likely that the Bay Area will see one less seat in the next House of Representatives. If the traditional undercount of minorities and the poor takes place, we might see a bigger cut in our representation.

The mission of the new citizen panel will be to advise MTC on transportation policies in the San Francisco Bay Area, incorporating diverse perspectives relating to the environment, the economy and social equity. Some of the issues that this new panel might be asked to advise on include. Click here for more information. Deadline February 1, 2010.
